In December 1991 following heavy rain the river bank and part of the supporting wall on Town Street collapsed taking part of the road with it. As a result Town Street was closed and in the year which followed re-construction on a massive scale took place while local traders suffered the results of an equal lack of custom.
December 1991 - The bank collapses and the problems begin. March 1992 and work begins in earnest By mid May the place looks like a war zone
Casualties among the shop keepers begin to mount and bitterness ensues A digger manages to find the main water supply Early September and things are starting to take shape
No part of Town Street was left untouched The finishing touches are applied December 1992 and amid great celebrations the Fire Brigade have the honour of declaring the road back in business
